Hans Igler Estate

The Cabernet Sauvignon-Blaufränkisch blend Vulcano was first created by Hans Igler in the 1988 vintage and has long since become a classic among Austrian reds. A tasting of all the past vintages of Vulcano confirms its aging potential. The estate’s youngest offspring has quickly followed and is already recognized as one of the country’s very best reds.

The first Ab Ericio from the 1997 vintage was made nearly completely from Merlot, but the following blends have been composed mainly of indigenous grape varieties and represent an assemblage of the best barrels from the Igler Estate cellars that takes its place among the country’s most remarkable red wines in the past years.

Waltraud Reisner-Igler and Wolfgang Igler are striving towards their vision of a perfected Blaufränkisch. Through selected clones thriving in their ideal soils, a Blaufränkisch with more pronounced fruit on the nose and more concentration and sappy juice on the palate should be achieved.

The prerequisite for the high quality of the Igler Estate wines are the sandy clay and gravel soils of the prized vineyards Kart, Hochberg, and Goldberg. Next to the Pinot Noir from the Fabian vineyard and the other wines already mentioned, the estate vinifies classics like Blaufränkisch and Cabernet Sauvignon, which have also received many awards.

Ascent of the Vulcano
On the Hans Igler Route

Hans Igler was a red wine legend in Burgenland long before his untimely death. In the mid 1970’s he was among the first in Austria to vinify his wines completely dry and in 1983 he was also one of the ridiculed avant-garde that matured wines in small French oak barrels.

Numerous awards in the following years confirmed Igler’s constant efforts towards improved quality. After her father’s passing, Waltraud Reisner-Igler dedicated her education in viticulture and enology to her father’s vision and together with her husband Wolfgang Reisner took over the family winery.

Next to the powerful, aromatic Blaufränkisch wines from the best vineyards of Deutschkreutz, Hochberg and Kart, an excellent blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Blaufränkisch called Vulcano is vinified. A new flagship blend Ab Ericio was created with the 1997 vintage and takes the winery yet another step further in quality.
